Butterfly on the Wing

Not so very long ago I had two pets living on my kitchen window sill. They were carried into the house in mason jars, riding on parsley leaves.

Elasa and Gavin each laid claim to one and, since it was obvious that one was a girl and one was a boy, they were named Esther and John accordingly. (Our children are a bit deprived in the pet department due to our location in town, their father's allergies, and their mother's general lack of interest in pet care!)

After munching on her fill of parsley, Esther made a neat little green cocoon and waited silently to be reborn.

Finally, after several weeks, it happened! I glanced at the mason jar and saw a fluttering. The cocoon was empty and Esther was testing her new wings against the confines of her home.

What must it feel like to fall asleep a worm and wake up a butterfly?

After Elasa had a chance to show off her pet's new tricks to Daddy, we took the jar outside and removed the cheesecloth. Esther had to be coaxed out into the great big world and then there she sat, released and brooding, on the porch. Awhile later, at the threat of being picked up, she finally took wing and flew away.

It's pretty amazing to bring a living creature into the house in one form and to release it in quite another.

Now we have only one pet living on my kitchen window sill. John built his cocoon even before Esther, but his waiting goes on and on and it begs the question: is he even alive in there?

His life doesn't look very appealing right now, or very hopeful.

I would be like Esther...

Leaving all traces of wormhood behind

And soaring to lofty heights on brand-new wings.

A beautiful butterfly.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17

  1. Right now we have three monarch cocoons. And we are eagerly waiting for them to hatch. I hope that John will hatch. I think Esther was very pretty.

    1. I would love to have a monarch hatch in my kitchen sometime! Do you give your little pets names, too? You'll have to let me know when one of your butterflies comes out!
